 Regional Fund for Science and Technology

The Regional Fund for Science and Technology (FRCT) is a public agency of the Regional Government of the Azores, under the Regional Secretariat for Sea, Science and Technology (SRMCT) being responsible for the internationalization of the Azores Scientific and Technologic System. FRCT follows up the European and international R&I funding programmes in order to increase the participation and to promote the research and innovation developed in the Region position the Azores at the R&I International Agenda. FRCT also manages regional funds available for science, technological development and innovation, promoting and integrating relevant research projects and providing research grants. It is also the privileged channel for the Regional Government of the Azores participation in European and International research and innovation projects and collaborative activities with external entities.

FRCT work promotes the Azores’ Science, Technology and Innovation Excellence, by coordinating and developing the necessary actions for its internationalization, such as: funding research grants & fellowships; participating in R&D+I Projects under external financing programmes; facilitate and support Regional entities to increase their performance in the European R&I Framework Programmes; promote seminars, conferences, workshops and other similar activities in the field of science and technology and the information and knowledge society.

Gisela Nascimento

Gisela Nascimento

Project Coordinator

Gisela Nascimento is a member of FRCT’s of Directive Board, responsible for the institutional and financial services. Gisela coordinates also the FRCT involvement in Networks and ERA-NETs. Gisela has experience in the coordination of Biodiversity European projects as MOVE and MOVE ON and Netbiome CSA. Gisela has a Master Degree in Biomedical Sciences and a degree applied Biology by the University of the Azores . Since 2012, she has been working in international project management within the FRCT: MaReS and Transcrea (from PCT-MAC), NetBiome-CSA (FP7), BEST III (DG Environment Tender) and BiodivERsA3 (H2020). From 2004 to 2012, Gisela was a researcher at the University of the Azores, in the field of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, having published several scientific papers in this area.

Carolina Parelho

Carolina Parelho

Project Manager

Carolina Parelho is Project Manager at the Regional Fund for Science and Technology (FRCT) of the Azorean Regional Government. She holds a PhD in Biology (Biomedicine and Ecotoxicology) by the University of the Azores (Portugal), a Post-Graduation in Biotechnology in Biological Control, and a Degree in Biological Sciences and Health. She was a Postdoctoral researcher in the CE3C – Centre for Ecology, Evolution and Environmental Changes (GBA – Azorean Biodiversity Group, Portugal). From 2012-2018, she was a researcher in the University of the Azores, in the field of Ecology and Environmental Health, where she integrated several projects in the field of (Agro) Ecosystems Biodiversity and Health/natural resources management and protection, having published several scientific papers in these areas. Since March 2019, she has been working as a Project Manager on international Projects in FRCT, being responsible for projects related to Marine Biodiversity [MISTIC SEAS III (EMFF/DGENV)], Ecosystem Services Mapping and Assessment in Europe Overseas [MOVE and MOVE-ON (DGENV)].

Marta Vergilio

Marta Vergilio

Project Manager

Marta Vergílio holds a PhD in Biology from the University of the Azores, working on the ecological structure in spatial plans for small islands, and a Master Degree in Environmental Engineering from the University of Aveiro. She was member of the Research Centre in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources – CIBIO-Azores and, currently, she continues to collaborate as external member. She was member of several regional and European research projects, having authored and co-authored in several technical reports and peer-reviewed scientific papers. Her main scientific interests are environmental planning and management, protected areas, green infrastructures, ecosystem functions and services and maritime spatial planning. Marta Vergílio is, currently, project manager at the Regional Fund for Science and Technology (FRCT) of the Azorean Regional Government, being involved in the coordination of European projects, such as MOVE and MOVE-ON.

Artur Gil

Artur Gil

Project Technical & Scientific Coordinator

Artur Gil is a Biophysical Engineer and holds an MSc in Spatial Planning and a Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences. He is currently a Researcher in Applied Geospatial Sciences and Technologies. His current research is focused on the development of geospatial applications, products, and indicators able to support decision-making on Spatial Planning, Climate Change Adaptation, Nature Conservation, Land Management, and Natural Hazards Assessment in remote territories. He published more than 40 papers in SCI-indexed scientific journals. Artur Gil has already formally published with about 200 scientists from many different countries and with diverse scientific backgrounds. He was already awarded several highly competitive national fellowships. He was or still is a member of several nationally (FCT) and internationally-funded (European Commission, MIT) R&D projects (e.g. H2020, FP7, PCT-MAC, and COST actions), being the national PI of the MaCoBioS H2020 project (https://macobios.eu/)

Miguel Vieira

Miguel Vieira

Financial Manager

Miguel Vieira, male, Financial Manager of the Regional Fund for Science and Technology (FRCT), responsible for all financial management of the projects and of the FRCT.  Has a degree in business management by the University of Azores, and is currently finishing his Master´s Degree in Economics and Business Science with a specialty in Finances in the University of Azores. Has previous working experience managing its own at Real-State and as tour guide.
